Parkway Electric Hosts Power Lunch Seminar for Industry “LEEDers”
Guest Speakers meet to address LEED certification and energy conservation
in the industrial setting Many construction-based companies are seeking LEED® certification for their projects as a proactive way to reduce the pollution and waste associated with industrial buildings. Since LEED is a fairly new concept, Parkway Electric will be hosting an educational, LEED seminar luncheon on September 11, 2008. The event is one in a series of 5 “Power Lunches” scheduled to take place at Parkway Electric’s new facility at 3755 36th St. SE, Grand Rapids. Speakers, Levi Gardner,
Marie Zeman and Mitch Boucher will take the podium beginning at 11:30 am. “LEED certification is steadily gaining popularity among companies in the built environment that want to offer a more eco-friendly and over time, a more wallet-friendly industrial building design,” said one Michigan builder. LEED Certification is based upon a point system awarded and corroborated by a third party. Sustainability is judged based upon site development, materials, energy and waste efficiency and the amount of water savings. Recipients may receive silver, gold or platinum accreditation depending upon the number of points earned for a specific project.
Each guest speaker will bring their expertise to the podium to discuss LEED and how it pertains to sustainable, industrial architecture. Levi Gardner, Sustainable Coordinator for Integrated Architecture, will be among the three to speak at the luncheon event. Integrated Architecture focuses on natural resource conservation and minimizing the negative environmental impact of building.
Levi's experience includes a GVSU internship at Metro Health where he developed a hospital-wide sustainability journal, investigated numerous sustainable initiatives and performed energy audits on mechanical systems for several outpatient locations. Charged with managing the LEED certification of IA projects, Levi is shepherding 10 projects through the LEED process.
Also among the professionals to speak at the leadership seminar, is Mitch Boucher. With 16 years of experience in the energy and facility construction industry, Mitch has worked for electric utilities, consulting firms, and fortune 500 companies. Presently a Project Manager for Haworth, he has held various engineering, system operations, and management positions. Mitch has authored and presented seminars on Energy Efficient Building Design and has designed hundreds of energy efficient power and lighting systems for commercial, industrial and office facilities.
To complete the third event in the power lunch series, Marie Zeman will share her environmental knowledge with seminar attendees. In 2007, Marie led a team of people to achieve the first Platinum rated LEED certification for Existing Buildings in Michigan. This was the eighth building in the U.S. to achieve the highest level awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Marie earned her Bachelor's in Science degree from Michigan State University in 1986 and is a 2004 graduate of the Facilities Management program from Ferris State University. In addition, she is also a member of IFMA as well at the West Michigan Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.
Bringing these experts together, Parkway Electric is a 110-person team of electricians, technicians, engineers, estimators, project managers, management and designers. Parkway specializes in power, communications, and controls and offers services ranging from building and design to
service and maintenance. “We specialize in power, communications and controls. We’ve combined the three to allow GC’s to source all of these services within a single company,” said Parkway’s Sales & Marketing Manager, Gary Zandstra in a prepared statement. “Our goal as a company is to foster long-term relationships built on strong work, trust and a deep respect for preserving the environment.”
